Antique Hasbro Toys

Hasbro was first started as a textile company by brothers Henry and Halal Hassenfeld. They branched out to make school supplies and in 1940 came out with their first toys - nurse and doctor kits. These kits came complete with caps and stethoscopes. Besides medical kits, Hasbro is also known for making grown-up things small, such as a sewing machine and ice cream maker.

Hasbro's first toy that was extremely popular was Mr. Potato Head. It was first manufactured in 1952 and is reputed to have been the first toy advertised on television. The original Mr. Potato Head was not made of plastic, but instead had a styrofoam head and came with a body, feet and hands, three hats a pipe, glasses, and felt beards and mustaches along with the traditional eyes, ears and mouths.

Hasbro was also the producer of G.I. Joe action figures. The Hassenfelds claim to have invented the term "action figure" to appeal to boys who would not want to play with dolls.

As with any vintage toy, the most valuable ones are those that are unsealed and still in the box. It is a wonder that these toys have never been with, and the temptation is always to open it for a peak. This, however, would ruin its value, and for the true collector, sometimes the box is in fact more valuable than the toy. In any case, antique Hasbro toys will be a welcome addition to your small or large antique toy collection.
